Transitions in life can create fear as many of us have difficulty welcoming change into our lives. Instead of seeing a wonderful opportunity, we may see the change as a loss and a detriment to our lives. Birth, death, job change, marriage, divorce, graduation, retirement, moving, ageing and empty nests are all transitions that can create anxiety and nervousness and stress. These changes in our lives can bring up a lot of fear and uncertainty but they can also be rewarding and will ultimately have unlimited benefits that we are unable to see while still in the middle of the transition or change process. Sometimes we have to get through to the other side of the changes to see these benefits.
Even self-imposed change - change that in your heart you know is for the better - can create a lot of anxiety. This can include leaving a job that we know is not in our best interest or leaving a relationship for the same reason. This can cause a lot of difficulties because we may feel as though we have lost something meaningful even though it wasn't a good fit for us. We can experience grief and loss and experience self-doubt as a result. An experienced and compassionate counsellor can help you through this challenging period.
Or we can work and struggle in order to do something meaningful and become someone unique and special yet when we finally achieve it, it is not enough to bring the happiness and meaning we expected. Worse, if we do not achieve it, we can then feel depressed, alone and judge ourselves a failure.
